A Guide to Yule – the Winter Solstice

The Winter Solstice, also known as Yule or Midwinter falls between 20th & 23rd December each year. At this point, we reach peak darkness, the shortest day of the year where the sun sits at its lowest in the sky.

In the natural world, there is both a deep stillness and busyness that exists simultaneously. As the woodlands rest, many animals are busy searching far and wide for food. We can often feel this contrasting energy reflected in our own lives too. Cosy, quiet evenings snuggled under blankets interspersed with busy preparations and never ending to do lists in the run up to the festive season.

In today’s post, I shall be sharing some of my favourite, very simple ways to embrace the season.

Connect to the Season

In my previous post, I talked about how my rituals are often quite spontaneous these days. I tend to honour the energy of the season by being present in the small, everyday moments. Here are some of the moments of peace and connection I have been finding amidst the busy days of December;

  • Taking a quiet moment to experience the Sun rising and falling on the day, often with a cuppa in hand, enjoying the colours of the sky and the sensations I notice within myself.
  • Taking a walk out on the frosty days to soak in the sparkly magic. I love to notice shapes and colours of plants and leaves, spiderwebs and frosty surfaces.
  • Feeling the Sun soak into my face when it makes an appearance and thanking it for its warmth and light even on the darkest days.
  • Walking in the woods, feeling the stillness and soaking in some of the peace. I love to gather natural treasure for decorations – cones and evergreen bundles to bring the peace of the forest home.
  • Sinking in to cosy spaces – blankets, hot drinks, warm socks, candles and fire.
  • Lighting candles, and finishing the day by noting down some of the day’s treasures.

I would love to hear the ways you are connecting with the energy of the season.
