Sourcing high quality natural ingredients for our products is really important to us. Since setting up Wild Fen last year, lots of our time has been spent trialling and researching ingredients and thinking about our priorities when it comes to the ones we select.
From the very beginning we knew we wanted all of our skincare to be effective whilst remaining 100% natural and free from chemicals, preservatives and artificial fragrances. By creating water free, oil based products this was possible to achieve.
With the base ingredient for most of our skincare being oil, we set about considering which ones we wanted to include. We knew we wanted our oils to be sustainable and sourced as locally as possible to keep our carbon footprint low. This ruled our some lovely skincare oils such as Jojoba and Coconut oil for example.
We began our search closer to home (right across the road in fact) where we strolled daily alongside fields of bountiful sunflowers. We set about researching the properties of the oil, extracted from the seeds. Sunflower seed oil has a plethora of healing benefits to the skin. Firstly, it has been shown to significantly increase skin hydration by 12 -18% in just 4 weeks, reducing dryness and scaling without blocking pores. It has been effective in reducing skin inflammation and enhancing the function of the skin barrier; helping conditions such as psoriasis and eczema and is readily selected as a treatment for babies with dermatitis. On top of this, it has antimicrobial properties that reduce bacterial and fungal infections and accelerates wound healing.
To ensure that all the goodness is extracted from the oil, we chose an organic and cold pressed variety. This means that only pressure is used to obtain the oil from the seed, rather than heat and chemicals which can compromise the beneficial compounds. Sunflower seed oil provides a wonderful base that we add to, to further enhance it’s properties with the goodness of plants.
We are currently infusing this nutritious oil with Rose and Jasmine flowers for a nourishing face oil that will be available in our shop soon!
