I hope the sunny start to May has brought you an opportunity to enjoy some time outdoors. It is my favourite time of year when the leaves are such vibrant shades of green and paths are lined with wild flowers.
Last week was National Hedgerow Week, a time to raise awareness and celebrate a precious habitat, iconic to the British landscape. It coincided completely by accident with a project we have been dreaming of for a while…
In today’s post I shall be introducing you to our Wild Beads of the Hedgerow necklace plus sharing a discount code with you as a thank you for your support, so lets dive in!
Hedgerow magic
Hedgerows can be incredible refuges for wildlife, with one study finding over 2000 species present in one hedgerow! May is a perfect time to enjoy them as they fill with blossom, wildflowers and busy birds and butterflies.
Wild Jewellery
Over the past 3 years, we have been gathering fallen sticks and drying them to hand carve into wild pendants. It is a very different experience to working with kiln dried timber – hence why we use Wild in the name!
Whilst there is a lot of wind fallen wood on the ground, finding a piece that we can actually craft with is few and far between. It requires lots of time spent getting to know trees and habitats and is a process that we believe enriches our jewellery. This way of working feels guided by the trees and is our way of honouring their energy and stories. It results in unique patterns, colours and features from the wood’s interactions with its environment.
Wild beads of the Hedgerow
Whilst working with individual tree energy is wonderful, there are habitats where the combined force of particular trees feel especially potent, and the hedgerows are a brilliant example of this. They are places of safety, home to so much wildlife and a rich source of herbal medicine and inspiration for us human folk too.
We wanted to create a piece which would celebrate the Hedgerow and includes 5 beads turned from Hazel, Oak, Elder, Hawthorn and Blackthorn woods. Whilst there are many species that can make up a hedge, these 5 trees are frequently found, feed huge numbers of species and feel to us to embody this magical habitat.
